Every edition of Saturday Morning Cartoons offers a brand new set of opportunities for local playwrights to collaborate with their children. Tethys, Hero and I were invited to write for the upcoming ”Saturday Morning Cartoons" show in April/May 2015. And, the Theatre is right around the corner from NKS at The Pocket Theatre (across from Chocolate on Greenwood).
Writing this with my kiddos was hellish and amazing. Trying to get them to commit to one story was difficult. I had to explain to them that they needed to make choices. I used a cookie analogy: "
Me: What kind of food do you want to eat?
Hero: Cookies!
Me: What goes into cookies?
Tethys: Chocolate chips!
Hero: Sprinkles!
Me: Is anything bad in cookies?
Both: no!
Me: What about spaghetti? Do you want spaghetti in your cookies?
Both: Gross!
Me: right, not everything is good in the same meal. You like spaghetti and you like cookies but mixed together and you won't like either - it's too much. So, I know you want to main characters to be astronauts and mermaids and pirates and selkies... but let's just pick two, okay?
So, we wrote a play about fairies and pirates who play with stars and meteors on the moon. And it was their wonderful idea to make the play interactive which just ignited the audience and capped the collection of plays beautifully.
